Chander Pahar: A Bengali Adventure Film
Chander Pahar (trans:Mountain of the Moon) is a 2013 Indian Bengali-language action-adventure film directed by Kamaleshwar Mukherjee and produced by Mahendra Soni and Shrikant Mohta under the banner of their production house Shree Venkatesh Films. It features Bengali actor Dev in the lead role as Shankar, a young man who dreams of exploring Africa and its mysteries. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, which was published in 1937 and is considered a classic of Bengali literature.

Plot Summary
The film follows the adventures of Shankar, a 20-year-old man from a village in Bengal, who secures a job as a station master in a remote station in Uganda Railway through a fellow villager working there. He leaves his home and family behind and sets off for Africa, where he encounters various dangers and wonders, such as lions, snakes, volcanoes, diamonds, and a legendary creature called the Bunyip. He also meets Diego Alvarez, a Portuguese explorer who becomes his friend and mentor, and who tells him about the Mountain of the Moon, a mythical mountain in the Richtersveld that is said to be the source of a huge diamond mine.

Critical Reception and Box Office Performance
The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, who praised the cinematography, the action sequences, the music, and Dev's performance. The film was also appreciated for its faithful adaptation of the novel and its depiction of Africa. The film was released on 20 December 2013 in West Bengal and on 27 December 2013 in India. It was also released worldwide on 9 January 2014. The film became the most successful film in Bengali cinema at that time, grossing 20 crore at the box office. Sequel and Franchise
The film was followed by a sequel titled Amazon Obhijaan in 2017, which was also directed by Kamaleshwar Mukherjee and starred Dev as Shankar. The sequel was based on another novel by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay called Aranyak (trans:Of The Forest), which follows Shankar's journey to the Amazon rainforest in search of El Dorado. The sequel surpassed the original film in terms of box office collections and became the highest grossing Bengali film of all time. The sequel was also released in several languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Odia, Assamese, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Bhojpuri, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala and English.
The Chander Pahar franchise is one of the most popular and successful franchises in Bengali cinema. It has also inspired several merchandise products, such as books, comics, games, toys, and clothing. A third film in the franchise is reportedly in the works, which will be based on another novel by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay called Pather Panchali (trans:Song of the Road), which is the first part of his famous Apu trilogy.
